A few months back, I received an email from someone with whom it was obvious that English was not his first language. His grammar was not perfect, his sentences were poorly constructed and his email program did not have an English spellcheck. But... I could feel from the email that he had a heart and he had a passion.
He asked me if I would consider doing some pro bono work for a charity he was starting in Nigeria. My immediate reaction was "No, I'm not sending $1,000 to ensure I receive $10 million in a few weeks time" - the typical Nigerian scam! I then wrote him back and asked for more details. He told be about his idea of using SMS and cell phones to help African children learn English. I was hooked!
Having grown up in Africa, I could feel something pulling me back. Elvis was very happy that not only would I create an identity for him and help him with his branding needs, but I was also African (he was a little surprised when he saw a photo of me and then learned the word "caucasian")
I can only hope my creativity helps his endeavors and that he succeeds for Africa's youth!
